About Region 5
Region 5 of Overeaters Anonymous (OA) is a service body, made up of Groups and Intergroups in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Southwest Ontario (Windsor to London), and the greater Chicago area/Champaign-Urbana/Decatur/Rockford areas of Illinois. It is one of ten Regions organized to serve the world-wide fellowship of OA.
Region 5 Purpose
Region 5’s purpose is to aid those with the problems of compulsive eating – done through the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous and guided by the Twelve Concepts of OA Service; also to serve and represent the OA Intergroups and Groups within Region 5.
How Region 5 Serves Intergroups and Groups of OA
Region 5:
- Practices and safeguards the Steps, Traditions, and Concepts of Service of Overeaters Anonymous.
- Maintains direct communication and works with Groups, Intergroups, and other Regions.
- Provides a personal, immediate means of answering urgent questions from individuals, Groups, and Intergroups. It offers support/suggestions/experience with difficult situations.
- Holds Region 5 assemblies three times a year during which Intergroup representatives and Region Board members meet to administer and conduct Region 5 business. At these assemblies, it also arranges sessions in which Intergroup representatives share exciting and effective ways of strengthening abstinence, retaining members, and solving vital Intergroup issues.
- Provides funding assistance based on need to help Intergroups:
- Send representatives to Region 5 assemblies
- Send delegates to the World Service Business Conference
- Participate in public information programs to spread the word about OA.
- Publishes its newsletter, “Freedom from Bondage,” three times a year.
- Maintains a website (see below) with event information, Intergroup links, Region 5 business, etc.
- Works with unaffiliated Groups to link them with an Intergroup wherever possible and represents them at the World Service Business Conference.
- Maintains a list of Region 5 OA speakers available to Intergroups throughout the Region.
- Hosts a Region 5 Convention annually for a weekend of recovery and fellowship.
- Delivers, through its Board, free workshops to Intergroups on Service, Traditions, Concepts, Sponsorship, Strong Meetings, Abstinence, Intergroup Inventories, and other topics – all designed to strengthen the Intergroups and the Fellowship, and to carry the message of recovery.
